中世に見られる山国郷は、当郷の遺名であろう。（中世の山国郷について）中世文書に見える地名のうち、安於曽木については、本耶馬渓町に大字木曽、本耶馬渓町大字深耶馬に字北木曽があり、江淵については耶馬渓町宮園に字江淵がある。山国川水系上流域の本耶馬渓・耶馬渓両町から山国町にまたがる広大な山林地帯を称したものだろう。（p839）
