『和名抄』にみえる池田郷、千葉郷、三枝郷等を含む旧千葉郡西部であり、現在の千葉市の大半が荘内に含まれていたと推定されており、千葉氏名字の地であった。（『講座日本荘園史』第5巻p.152）
