郷内には「延喜式」神名帳に、「大鳥郡廿四座」のうちとして見える「美多弥神社」「多治速比売神社」があり、郷域は、現在の堺市野々井・別所・美木多上・和田・鴨谷台・平井などの一帯と推定されている。（p907）
