「土佐幽考」は「山田郷の南にあり」とし、「地名辞書」は「今平田村、和田村（宿毛上郷）、宿毛村、小筑紫村等なるべし」とする。「日本地理志料」は「戸内、押川、和田、坂ノ下、二宮、中角、山北、野地、草木薮の九邑」と記す。牧田は平田で、現在の宿毛市平田町戸内・平田町黒川・平田町中山を中心とする地域とされる。（p848）
