「延喜式」神名帳の備中国後月郡１座として「足次山神社」が見え、「アシキ」「アシツキ」「アスキ」などの傍訓を付す。同社は、現在の井原市井原町に鎮座するが、旧天神山村（芳井町天神山）の足次大明神を移したと伝えられる。郷域についても、足次山神社の旧鎮座についての伝承を信じるならば、現在の芳井町付近に比定できる。（p80）
