「日本地理志料」は郷域について、中世の芦北荘の史料などから「田上、川岳、鶴喰、上原、小川内、黒岩、大岩諸邑」とし、現在の芦北町北部、八代郡坂本村、八代市南部から田浦町にかけての一帯に比定している。なお「地名辞書」は「今佐敷村なるべし」として、現在の芦北町の中心部から北西部にかけての一帯としている。（p87）
